Comic Book Storage Cabinet

Here are the measurements and materials that I used to build the cabinets.

I provide this instructions "as is". I don’t have any videos of how I did it since I just went along on how I originally planned them, but I will try to provide as much information and pictures as possible.

The unit has 1 drawer for Magazines/Graphic Novel and 3 drawers for Golden to Current comic sizes.

Materials: Screws

  • 8 x 1 1/4 Flat Socket Head: Used to ensemble the cabinet
  • 8 x 1/2 Truss Socket Head: Used for the rails.*
  • 6 x 3/4 Flat Socket Head: Used on the drawers
  • 4 x 3/8 Pan Socket Head: Used in the front Acrylic cover of the drawers
*Note: The rails come with screws but they were to long for the thickest of plywood I was using so I had to use a different size.

Materials: For 1 Drawer for Golden to Current size Comics

  • Two 22 3/4 x 12 in of 1/2 in veneer Plywood for the Side wall of the drawers
  • One 22 3/4 x 9 1/4 in of 1/2 in veneer Plywood for the bottom of the drawers
  • One 12 1/2 x 9 1/4 in of 1/4 in Plywood for the back cover of the drawers
  • One 8 1/4 x 10 in of 1/4 Plywood for the inside front of the drawer, to divide the comics and the display comics
  • Two 10 in pieces of moldure to hold the inside from sheet
  • One 12 x 9 1/4 in of 0.08 in / 2 mm Plexiglas/acrylic for the front
  • One pair of 22in Self-closing Full-extension slides
  • 1 knob with two side screw

This is a look at the drawer once is put together:

I screwed the drawer sides from the bottom:

This is how I used the moldure to put the "limiter" that will divide the display comic form the rest, and also will prevent for the comics to fall forward into the acrylic presenting it form bending and possible from breaking because of the weigh.

First image is the moldures with no cover placed, then from the inside and last from the outside.

I placed the moldure and the plywood that makes the division using regular glue.

The rails came after i painted the drawers.Placed at the bottom of the side walls.

This is the back of the drawer. Notice I didn't put it right at the end of the drawer to prevent it from sticking out once in place.

When placing the acrylic, do the holes for the screws big enough for the screw to go through without being tight to not break it. Also, don’t use an electric screw driver to place the screws in, you may break it. Happened to me once.

Materials: For 1 Drawer for Magazines/Graphic Novel size
  • Two 22 3/4 x 12 in of 1/2 in veneer Plywood for the Sides of the drawers
  • One 22 3/4 x 10 1/4 in of 1/2 in veneer Plywood for the bottom of the drawers
  • One 12 1/2 x 10 1/4 in of 1/4 in Plywood for the back of the drawers
  • One 9 1/4 x 10 in of 1/4 Plywood for the inside front of the drawer to divide the comics and the display comics
  • Two 10 in pieces of to hold the inside from sheet
  • One 12 x 10 1/4 in of 0.08 in / 2 mm Plexiglas/acrylic for the front
  • One pair of 22in Self-closing Full-extension slides
  • 1 knob with two side screw

This drawer was built same as the one for Golden to current comics. The only difference is that is a bit more wider.

Materials: Cabinet

  • Five 13 x 23 in of 3/4 in Plywood for the dividers
  • Two 23 x 45 3/4 in of 5/8 in Plywood for top and bottom of the cabinet
  • One 45 3/4 x 14 1/4 of 1/4 in Plywood to cover the back of the cabinet

I don’t have many pictures about the cabinet when I put it together.

I attached the drawer rails to the 3/4 plywood dividers before putting it together.
I used some of the leftover wood I had to make some "guides" that will help me to place the walls at the right distance and I will only put a couple of screws to just hold it enough for me to test the drawer and make sure it went in and out with no issues. I tested each drawer as I was putting it together.

In the picture you can see the two 11 ¼ guides that I used for the magazine drawer. I also had two 10 ¼ for the Golden-Current drawers. This will help me to put the wall sat the right distance

  1. Thanks for the info. I've been looking for some plans like this! You are a life saver. Just curious, how much did the project cost to make? Either over all of per shelf. Thank you!!

    1. Thanks! Like you, i searched all over the place and could not find anyone that would give some sort of instructions to have on paper and use as a guide, just overall descriptions on videos, so i decided to put together my own in hope that would help everyone out there that would like to do something similar.

I cant say for sure the cost as i did not do them all at the same time but I would say something around the 600.00 dollars (CAD) for all 3. The two most expensive parts are the rails (I used heavy duty as i did not want them to bend with the weigh once the drawer was full) and the veneer Plywood for the drawers. I have now since discovered that even tough is not same quality the sanded plywood will work too. It is not as refined as the veneer but it has no splinters that could damage the comics and is half the price. I will be using it for my next set of drawers and should bring the cost down.

  2. Also I had another ?...what size screws did u use on the drawers? The instructions say 6x3/4 flat socket but the jpg pic of the screw box shows a 6x1 1/4 wood screw. Was just wondering which you used. Thanks!
